Iranian Intelligence Accused of Orchestrating Plots Against Jews in Europe

French authorities have uncovered an alleged Iranian-sponsored terrorist cell operating in Europe, marking a resurgence of state-sponsored terrorism targeting Jews and Israelis. The revelation comes as part of an investigation dubbed “Marco Polo,” which has led to the arrest and detention of two individuals in Paris.

On May 4, French police detained Abdelkrim S., 34, and his partner Sabrina B., 33, charging them with conspiracy in connection with a criminal terrorist organization. The couple is suspected of being key operatives in a broader network orchestrated by Iranian intelligence services.

Revival of Iranian State-Sponsored Terrorism

According to a report by France’s General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI), Iran has resumed its policy of targeted killings since 2015. The agency notes that the threat has intensified in the wake of the Israel-Hamas conflict, suggesting a strategic shift in Iran’s approach to foreign operations.

The alleged plots aimed to sow fear among Iran’s political opposition, as well as Jewish and Israeli communities in Europe. Specific targets included:

  • A former employee of an Israeli security firm based in Paris and three colleagues residing in the Paris suburbs
  • Three Israeli-German citizens in Munich and Berlin
  • Four Israeli-owned companies in southern France, which were reportedly targeted for arson between late December 2023 and early January 2024

Iranian intelligence services are accused of recruiting individuals with criminal backgrounds, including drug lords, to carry out these operations. This tactic potentially allows Iran to maintain plausible deniability while leveraging local criminal networks.

Abdelkrim S., the primary suspect in France, has a significant criminal history:

  • Previously sentenced to 10 years in prison for a killing in Marseille
  • Released on probation in July 2023
  • Accused of being the main France-based operative for the Iranian-sponsored cell
  • Allegedly made multiple trips to Germany for reconnaissance, including visits to Berlin with his wife

The suspect denies all accusations, claiming his travels were for purchasing purposes and that his involvement in the arson plots was merely as an intermediary in an insurance scam.

This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by European security services in countering transnational threats. It also underscores the complex geopolitical tensions between Iran and Western nations, particularly in light of Iran’s adversarial relationship with Israel.

While French authorities have made significant progress in uncovering this alleged plot, the case raises questions about the effectiveness of current counterterrorism measures and the potential for similar operations in other European countries.

As investigations continue, international cooperation will be crucial in addressing the broader implications of Iranian intelligence activities on European soil. The case serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat of state-sponsored terrorism and the need for vigilance in protecting vulnerable communities.
