Israel, Hamas Enter Indirect Talks Amid Pressure for Hostage Release

Negotiators from Israel and Hamas began indirect discussions in Egypt this week, focusing on President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan aimed at resolving the Gaza conflict. Delegations met in Sharm el-Sheikh to consider conditions for the release of hostages and prisoners, a central issue in the American proposal. The talks coincide with the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel that triggered the ongoing war in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu set the release of all hostages as Israel’s top condition before any further progress on Trump’s plan. “As long as the last hostage has not returned, we will not move forward on any other point,” Netanyahu said after meeting with bereaved families. He also reiterated that Israel will maintain control over Gaza’s disarmament and rejected any future Hamas or Palestinian Authority governance in the territory. Israeli officials noted that the current pause in maneuvers is not an official ceasefire, but enables Hamas to prepare for the release process.

Hamas announced readiness to enter negotiations, but maintained certain demands regarding its future status. In response, President Trump expressed optimism about a breakthrough, while warning Hamas could face severe consequences if talks fail. High-level mediators from the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey joined the discussions, with more meetings scheduled. Both sides continue military and humanitarian operations amid calls from international actors for a cessation of hostilities to facilitate dialogue.

Families of hostages voiced frustration over Netanyahu’s approach, pressing for greater clarity and accountability. Several families accused the prime minister of obstructing progress and demanded that negotiations to secure the release of the remaining hostages take precedence. Israeli officials state that 48 hostages remain in Gaza, including those alive and confirmed dead, highlighting the urgency surrounding the talks.
